>> good morning, it is 6:00. lots to get to this morning including election coverage but first -- first, we have to begin with the giants capturing the world series title. sharon chin is at at&t park in san francisco that's where the giants arrived with a trophy early this morning. sharon, good morning. you were there. >> reporter: yup it was. -- there were a lot of fans here early this morning. they wanted to be here to welcome back the world series champs. here's what it looked like. >> what! the team buses rolled in at about 4 a.m. to a crowd of cheering fans. the team walked out with the winning trophy. members of the team so the fans were not disappointed. some of the players came out to give hi-5's and to thank the faithful. some fans came hours away as fresno, some got autographs, and cody was says it still don't feel real. some of the team members say it

still hasn't sunk in yet. >> everybody is out here at 4 a.m., it's awesome. >> did anyone sleep on the plane? >> we tried. >> we can't believe we're here. >> drove all the way down from fresno. >> whoo! >> reporter: the crowd cheered as players drove home. players like tim lincecum and brian will some who waved on their way out. others like manager bochy and cody ross and sergio romo greeted the fans in person. they high fived and signed autographs, front page of the "chronicle" honoring the giants this morning. the giants are traveling home at this hour to the respective homes. some of their equipment is going to cooperstown. for example, the bat that edgar renteria used last night and tim lincecum's jersey are going to the hall of fame and you will see them there in 10 days. so some of their equipment will be available at the hall of

fame but tomorrow we'll see them at the parade. >> absolutely. we'll hear more about that later on. sharon, thanks very much! sharon at at&t park. all quiet now and very happy fans. all the celebrations started just after 7:30 last night when the final pitch was thrown. here it is. and for first time since 1954, the giants are world champions. >> brian wilson getting the biggest save of his life securing the 3-1 win but edgar renteria was named mvp after a three-run homer in the 7th inning. she will operation inside the locker room said it all. the giants have been waiting generations for this moment. it is their first world series win since the team moved to san francisco from new york in 1958. the giants official victory parade is tomorrow at 11 a.m. at montgomery and washington

streets. they will go down montgomery to market, west to civic center plaza. and you can watch the parade right here on cbs 5. we'll have more on the giants victory later on in the show. it is the day for the big midterm elections. after months of campaigning and millions of dollars, now voters get their say. the polls open less than an hour from now. let's go to mark sayre at a polling place in san jose to show us how some of the candidates spent the last day of their campaigns. mark, good morning. >> reporter: well, sydnie, good morning. let's talk about the gubernatorial race first. of course, the most expensive gubernatorial race ever in california state history. jerry brown for his part wrapped up his last full day of campaigning at a rally in oakland. he made one final plea for votes. he also had fun at the expense of meg whitman. >> my opponent didn't really realize it but when she made that statement a few months ago that she and her husband decided to move from new york to

california 30 years ago because there was such a good governor here and california was working for everybody! [ laughter ] >> reporter: for her part, meg whitman was also on the campaign trail before traveling to southern california. she began her day at a coffee shop in menlo park. she says she has not softening her approach in the final weeks of the campaign. >> we just said listen, you know, i'm going to tell people why i'm running, we are going to get out here and talk to people in their homes, schools, places of business. and, you know, we're going to remind people about jerry brown's record and, of course, what he said about being governor the last time. >> reporter: let's look at the latest field poll numbers. it shows jerry brown with a 10- point lead over meg whitman at this point. whitman though at that rally yesterday in menlo park says her polling shows the race to be dead even.

to kids under 18. an appeals court struck down the law last year. berkeley police have made a second arrest in a double shooting. they arrested a 20-year-old man yesterday. he is charged with the murder of one man and the attempted killing of another last tuesday. no motive has been released but they believe the victims were targeted. antioch police are looking for two robbers who snatched a woman's most prized possession. >> grabbed the dog and the purse and got away from me. i couldn't hang on. i couldn't hold on to the dog or the purse. >> 80-year-old helen was walking home in alameda saturday afternoon with her constant companion. her 6-year-old yorkie deuce when she was accosted. two men demanded her purse and her dog and threatened her with what they say was a gun. the dog does have an identifying microchip implant. police hope that will help get

the dog back. his name is deuce, by the way. 6:13. the governor clamping down during his final days in sacramento. >> what has been banned from several places like tattoo parlors and cruise ships. ,, our state is in a real mess. and i'm not going to give you any phony plans or snappy slogans that don't go anywhere. we have to make some tough decisions. we have to live within our means. we have got to take the power from the state capitol and move it down to the local level, closer to the people. and no new taxes, without voter approval.

we have got to pull together not as republicans or as democrats but as californians first. at this stage in my life, i'm prepared to do exactly that.

scott street. he was taken to the hospital but died soon after. investigators are now looking at the surveillance footage to find a description of the suspects. time now 6:19. it's happened again, another fake victim in the san bruno pipeline explosion. prosecutors say the 46-year-old requested $1,000 gift card. investigators caught on after she gave a fake address. she is now the 6th person charged as posing as a victim. her arraignment is on monday. state lawmakers have put some new limits on debit cards for welfare recipients. "l.a. times" reports the state has banned the use of the card at pot clubs and tattoo parlors cruise ships and other uses not consistent with the intent of the program. bell city council is going to hold a recall next march. last night an angry crowd confronted the city council and the mayor, who was arrested

this year on accusation of corruption. in march, residents will vote on whether to remove three councilmembers. eight current and former officials are charged with looting the city of $5.5 million. all are free on bail fending a pretrial hearing in december -- depending a pretrial hearing in disease. -- in december. one of the most closely watched senate races in the nation. of course, barbara boxer and carly fiorina for her part, carly fiorina she spent her last day of campaigning making one stop in elk grove near sacramento. fiorina says it is her belief that undecided voters will at this particular time balance in her direction and she continued to hammer away at the record of barbara boxer. >> we need to do something different in this state. enough of a 28-year career politician who has not done anything to put 2.3 million people back to work. enough of a career politician who has done nothing to turn the water back on in our great central valley. >> reporter: as for barbara boxer, she wrapped up her final full day of campaigning at a rally at oakland where she appeared with jerry brown. boxer did not mince words about fiorina saying fiorina sympathizes too much with big business and boxer also touted her record. >> i want to tell you something, oakland. you're the key. you're the key to sending me back to fight for the middle class, to fight for jobs, to fight for these carpenters, to fiorina. put them back to work! [ applause and cheers ] >> to stand up against the special interests. >> reporter: let's look at the latest polling date on this

race. those polls show barbara boxer with a 49 to 41% lead over carly fiorina. fiorina not surprisingly taking aim at that poll saying it is not accurate. we are here at a polling place in san jose where in santa clara county some interesting developments with mail-in ballots. all candidates hoping to mobilize their base calling for turnout. statewide we are expecting a 60% voter turnout which is average for a midterm. >> back to you. >> thank you. mark sayre in san jose. there is a big push to get out the vote today. some cabs in oakland are even offering free rides for voters. friendly cabs says it will offer free rides to and from the polls this morning from 7 to 9 and tonight from 6 until 8 p.m. we may not find out the results of some races for days. and that's because less than 40% of the 7.6 million mail-in ballots statewide have not even been returned. if you have a mail-in ballot you have to drop it off at any

polling place by 8 p.m. tonight. hearings a closer look at what's at stake. all 435 house seat are in play. right now, the breakdown is 255 democrats, 178 republicans and two vacancies. a party needs 218 seats to get a majority which means republicans only need to capture 39 seats to take control. 37 of the 100 senate seats are up for grabs. 19 of them are currently held by democrats. 18 by republicans. the republicans need to win 10 seat to take control of the senate. the odds of that may be slim but the gop is still expected to win enough seat to make passing -- the gop is still expected to win enough seats to make passing legislation even more difficult for democrats. we have an election special at 9 p.m. and a special edition of eyewitness news from 11 p.m. to midnight.

back up to you. 70 degrees. back to you. >> thank you. opening statements in a major corporate espionage trial. two of the world's largest business software makers will bring s software makers will their case before a judge and joining us now is jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. good morning to you. >> good morning, juliette. good morning, sydnie. the results of this trial may not be interesting. one company also admitted their business unit stole corporate secrets from oracle a few years back. what most people are watching for is whether or not hp's new ceo will have to take the witness stand if called upon by oracle and what oracle's larry ellison has to say. they are firing all sorts of

barbs at hp. the ceo of hp was part of the company that is accused of theft. hp doesn't want its new ceo on the witness stand saying anything embarrassing for him. he was supposed to start his new job at hp but there is no word if it happens. he may stay in germany until trial ends. clorox has earnings. investors not happy. revenue down 3% although profit was up 37%. that mainly occurred because clorox sold its auto care business. that gave a big boost. otherwise, its bottom and top line both missed expectations and clorox says that it's seeing consumer demand continuing to weaken. it had fewer shipments at the end of the recent quarter and the trend continues. clorox shares down 5%, at just over $63 a share.

overall though the market is doing fairly well mainly because the dollar is down considerably. about 1% against the euro this morning. stocks typically go higher when the dollar is down. dow is up 77 points. nasdaq higher by 22. is is up by 8. we'll see if those gains can be withstood all day long. we saw the same thing happen yesterday. strong start to the market that frittered away towards end as we get the results in the election today and the federal reserve begins its two-day meeting and the decision probably coming tomorrow. jason brooks, thank you. east oakland, live pictures from chopper 5. this is a three- alarm fire, we understand, at 640 east 15th street. this is between sixth and seventh avenues just off the at eight freeway.

but again, a three-alarm structure fire. that's all the information we have right now but we'll keep you posted. again, pictures from chopper 5 over in oakland of this three- alarm fire. it is 6:47. as you know, voters head to the polls today. lots of races and measures on the ballot and to break it all down for us, thank goodness, political analyst james taylor is in the house. where do we begin? first, you said to us don't look at the polls. >> exactly. not today. >> they are all over the place. there are about 900 different polls in the country with different results. so we can't rely on these polls at all. the exit polls are more likely to give you a better picture when people come out of the polls. we don't know if others will show up. >> you're saying that jerry brown has a double-digit lead? >> jerry brown is carrying

basically the california democratic party. barbara boxer is hitching her campaign on jerry brown because voters may be trending in his direction. for that reason i think he is carrying the party e has a long coattail effect. >> let's talk about the change in congress. we have 435 house seats are in play. this could change the makeup of the house of representatives. >> it could. >> and the speaker, as well. >> that would be unfortunate for pelosi. she is a big giants fan. happy about the giants winning. this is a dismal day for her. she was considered one of the most effective speakers of the house in history and she won't be anymore. >> when we look at the california u.s. senate seat up for grabs barbara boxer and fiorina. >> barbara boxer i think the polls are, you know, suggesting that she is, you know, the leading candidate that it's trending in her direction. again, the democrats of

california i think will be able to offset a narrative if the republicans are successful tomorrow morning. the california narrative is very different. what happens here is like a firewall against what's happening in the national trend. barack obama, michelle obama, they have invested a lot of time here in california. and even in places like wisconsin and in nevada where there are prediction that democrats are going to be overturned, all these trends are last-minute trends and what we know going back to the 1940s is that you can't trust the polls even up to the last minute. >> we'll be watching the polls as people come out of balloting and voting. >> head to the polls. they open in 10 minutes. >> we look forward to the results tomorrow morning. thank you. it is 6:49. let's take a look at what's going on this morning on "the early show." >> harry smith joins us now

you know it's bad when the press asks if you'd take a lie detector test. meg whitman didn't tell the truth about not voting or about how long she lived in california. she got caught in insider deals at goldman sachs. she changed her story about physically abusing an employee. she campaigned as tough as nails on immigration knowing her housekeeper of 9 years was undocumented. her tv ads have been condemned as false and misleading. and even her hometown newspaper said meg whitman has demonstrated "a loose relationship with the truth"

san francisco, 6:55. the san francisco giants are the world series champs. sharon chin is at at&t park in san francisco where screaming fans welcomed the winners home just a few hours ago. good morning. >> good morning. yeah, about 200 fans came here to give their team a great welcome home. here's a look. straight from sfo, the team buses pulled in at 4 a.m. to a crowd of cheering fans. the faithful were not disappointed. they saw the championship trophy and several team members walked out to high five and thank the fans. some fans come from hours away and drove here after last night's game. many left with autographs. now the fans say that they cannot wait so tomorrow's special feature, the parade starts at 11 a.m. down market street. >> thank you, sharon. supposed to be great weather, too. >> let's first go to elizabeth with one last look at the morning commute.

mypix photo for this hour, sunrise. share your photos, send them to mypix@cbs5.com. send them thank you, brian. that's nice! that's a look at your weather. back up to you. >> thank you. polls open in just a few minutes. but in one bay area county, there is a quirky problem with some of the ballots. let's go to kcbs radio's matt bigler at santa clara county's registrar's office. matt, what's the problem? >> reporter: right. well, last week, some mail-in ballots in santa clara county started being rejected by the optical scanners that scan these ballots. the reason is, there are some smudges on the ballot. let me show you what we're talking about. i'm going to cover up my votes here. this is actually my ballot. smudges on the crease that have basically confused the machines and caused them to be rejected. joining us to talk about this is matt moreles a spokesman for the santa clara counted registrar of voters. what are you doing to fix this? >> in the ballots that we have identified that has the smudging or shadowing, we found

that just a simple plain rubber erase her take away that excess toner ink without affecting the voter's ink that they marked their ballot choices with their regular pen. so when we have this smudging or shadowing that appears near where a voter might be making selections, all we have done is remove that attorney and then the machine can read it perfectly. >> reporter: using rubber erasers to rub out the smudges and then they can be read by the minute every machine. >> yes, a minor step we are taking quality control to make sure every vote counselors. we are not seeing significant delays. >> back to you guys. >> thank you. pottle opening in 20 seconds from now. -- position opening in 20 seconds from now. got a story idea or comment you would like to share with us? email brian@cbs5.com.
